Looking for the perfect way to spend a day off the dock? Just 35 minutes from your Yankton Lakehouse lies a hidden gem tucked into the river bluffs of northeast Nebraska - - - - Ponca State Park. Whether you’re chasing Missouri River views, reeling in a catfish, or just craving a scenic drive and fresh air, Ponca has you covered.
🛶 Morning: River Adventures & Wildlife Views
Start your day early with a drive across the bridge into Nebraska. As you wind through the wooded hills approaching the park, roll your windows down and let that Midwest breeze set the tone.
First stop? The river.
Cast a line from the Missouri National Recreational River or try the seasonally stocked Fishing Pond (think bass, bluegill, even trout!). Don’t have gear? No problem, Ponca State Park offers a Loaner Pole Program so you can borrow rods at no cost (just bring your license if you’re 16+).
Or, for a more immersive water experience, join a guided backwater kayaking tour, ideal for ages 12 and up. The gentle waters and lush surroundings make it feel like you’re in another world.
📞 Tip: Call 402-755-2284 ahead to check availability for kayak tours and loaner gear.
🐎 Midday: Trails, Horses & Hills
Ponca boasts over 22 miles of trails winding through the river bluffs. Lace up your hiking shoes or bring your bike—these paths offer everything from peaceful walks to more adventurous climbs.
For a unique experience, book a horseback trail ride (available through mid-August). It’s a guided, slow-paced ride that offers incredible photo ops and a chance to take in the landscape the old-fashioned way.
Not into horses? Tee off at the 9-hole golf course near the park entrance, or stop by the Eric Wiebe Shooting Complex to try archery, tomahawk throwing, and slingshot sessions. (Yes, really!)
🍔 Lunch with a View
Pack a picnic or hit up one of the park’s grilling areas for a casual lunch under the trees. If you’re visiting on a special weekend, like the Father’s Day Fish Fry (June 15) or the Missouri River Outdoor Expo (Sept 20–21), you’ll have no shortage of food options and local flair.
🌳 Afternoon: Aquatic Center & Scenic Wrap-Up
When the sun’s high, cool off at the Aquatic Center, open daily through mid-August, weekends only after that. It’s family-friendly, affordable, and the perfect way to relax before heading back to the lake.
Before you leave, swing by the Missouri National Recreational River Resource & Education Center for a hands-on look at the area’s natural and cultural history. It’s interactive, informative, and a great way to connect your adventure to the land itself.
🌅 Back to the Lake
As you drive back toward Yankton in the golden hour light, you’ll feel that perfect mix of refreshed and sun-kissed. Ponca State Park gives you just the right mix of nature, activity, and small-town charm to make a day trip feel like a full getaway.
